WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Obie Award-winning actress Charlayne Woodard reprises the role she created at Playwrights Horizons when L.A. Theatre Works records Fabulation or the Re-Education of Undine by Lynn Nottage for broadcast on public and satellite radio. Stuart K. Robinson directs Woodard and members of the original New York cast Daniel Breaker, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Melle Powers and Myra Lucretia Taylor, along with Gary Perez, Josh Stamberg and John Wesley as part of LATW's nationally-syndicated The Play's The Thing radio theater series at the Skirball Cultural Center.
In Fabulation, a high-power, ultra-chic, Ivy League-educated, African-American publicist (Woodard) finds herself pregnant, penniless, and jobless when her bounder of a husband embezzles all her money and disappears. Left with no choice but to return to the Brooklyn public housing projects from which she once fled, Undine is plunged into a topsy-turvy world of welfare mothers and drug addicts, forced to confront the family she left behind. It's a darkly comic rags-to-riches-to-rags tale of falling down and reaching up to find the goodness within.
