WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The epigram at the beginning of the script for the play Cuba and His Teddy Bear(1986) is a quote from a Chassidic poem: "A man must descend very low to find the force to rise again."

Cuba is a drug dealer on the Lower East Side of New York. Cuba's pals, Jackie and Redlights, are people much like himself, in the drug culture.

Cuba is also a single dad, and tries to do as well as he can for his son, the Teddy Bear of the title, who has some aptitude for creative writing. But Teddy has fallen into bad company, who have exposed him to heroin.

Along the way, Cuba had broken a promise to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Is the trouble befalling his son a manifestation of Divine Retribution?
