Coming to Long Beach, Santa Monica, and Irvine, LBO presents the Southern California premiere of the delightful, rarely staged, satirical musical comedy Cherry Town (Moskva, Cheryomushki) by Dmitri Shostakovich, libretto by Soviet humorists Vladimir Mass and Mikhail Chervinsky. This amusing story of social optimism in a new housing development against a backdrop of housing shortages and bureaucratic corruption premiered in 1959 at the Mayakovsky Operetta Theatre in Moscow. The work received its 2004 US premiere at Bard College, New York, staged by Francesca Zambello as part of a Shostakovich Festival. The light tone in contrast to its dark setting provides a timely edge to this satirical piece.
