Reprise thatre Company open their season with one of the greatest single achievements in musical history - Rodgers and Hammerstein's immortal Carousel. "If I Loved You," "Soliloquy" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" are just a few of the songs that make theatre lovers hail this show as one of the greatest scores ever composed. Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, now being given a passionate production by Reprise at the Freud Playhouse, can be a rousing success or a treacly disaster. Here, director Michael Michetti flawlessly balances the script's humor and sense of tragedy -- not to mention the rousing musical numbers -- never allowing one element to overwhelm the others.
For anyone unfamiliar with the plot (which was borrowed from Ferenc Molnar's Liliom), the show focuses on mill laborer Julie Jordan (Alexandra Silber), who falls for carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Robert Patteri).
