WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In the play An American Tract, working single mom Anne Jackson moves with her two boys into an inherited home in an exclusive all-white planned community. She's a nurse's assistant, with an income disparity between herself and her neighbors that is apparent. She is determined to make the best life possible for herself and her children, even if it means working two jobs and finding that her boyfriend is drifting away from her. Feeling a pressure to keep up with her neighbors, she begins to adventure into consumerism.
Anne has moved out of the projects and into the exclusive Park Circle so that her boys can continue to grow up away from depressed, violent surroundings. Some of her new neighbors with both economic and racial prejudices would like to see her fail, and secretly plot against her. The people immediately next door, the Rivers, are sympathetic and friendly to her, but they know all too well of the conspiracy against her. Will they break with their other neighbors, stand up for Anne's family, and do the right thing?
