Girlfriend starts performances tonight at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Set in Nebraska in the 1990s, the rock musical follows two teenage boys. One is a social outcast; the other is the quintessential jock. During the summer between high school graduation and the rest of their lives, they begin to explore a relationship and journey of self-discovery. Using Matthew Sweet’s pop album of the same name as a soundtrack, the show gives voice to small town kids, kids who didn’t quite fit in, and anybody who "remembers the terror and thrill of first love."

Ryder Bach and Curt Hansen reprise their roles from the 2013 Actors Theatre of Louisville’s production. Les Waters, director of the Actors Theatre production, also returns to direct this production, which features the book by Todd Almond and music and lyrics by Matthew Sweet.

The creative team includes David Zinn (set design and costume design), Ben Stanton (lighting design), Jake Rodriguez (sound design), Julie Wolf (musical direction), Joe Goode (choreography), and Paul Mills Holmes (stage manager).

Performances will run through August 9.
