Viola Davis, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and More Take Home 2017 Oscars

Playwrights Kenneth Lonergan and Tarell Alvin McCraney also received Academy Awards for their achievements in cinema.

Several actors with theater ties took home 2017 Academy Awards. The honors were presented February 27 at a ceremony in Los Angeles that was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

Viola Davis, who won a Tony Award for her performance in August Wilson's Fences on Broadway in 2010, took home an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the recent film adaptation. She is the ninth performer to take home both a Tony and an Oscar for the same role, and the first since Joel Grey to accomplish that feat with Cabaret in 1973.

Emma Stone received the Best Actress honor for her performance in the musical film La La Land, which also won an Oscar for Best Director (for Damian Chazelle), among several others.

In a surprise announcement, Moonlight, based on a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, won the Oscar for Best Picture, as well as the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Dear Evan Hansen writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, alongside Justin Hurwitz, took home the Best Original Song Oscar for "City of Stars" from La La Land. The tune beat out "How Far I'll Go," Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda's nominated song from Moana. Veteran playwright Kenneth Lonergan took home an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Manchester by the Sea.

Mahershala Ali, who appeared in Second Stage Theatre's production of Lydia R. Diamond's Smart People in 2016, took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work in Moonlight.

Asghar Farhadi's The Salesman, about a young Iranian couple performing in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman in Tehran, received the Best Foreign Language Film honor.
