Cinderella Set to Begin Performances at Center Theatre Group

Cinderella begins performances tonight at Center Theatre Group's Ahmanson Theatre. We all know the classic story of Cinderella. However, the musical by Rodger and Hammerstein rewrites the story for modern audiences. The premise remains the same, with a young woman transforming from a chambermaid into a princess with her traditional accoutrements: a glass slipper, pumpkin, and beautiful ball gown. Yet, the story looks at Cinderella as a contemporary figure in a fairy tale setting. She’s an independent young woman who seeks kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. She wants not only to flee her life of drudgery but also to make the world a better place, and in doing so, she helps to open the eyes of her one true love, the prince.

Based on the original book by Oscar Hammerstein II, the new book is by Douglas Carter Bean, featuring lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Richard Rogers. Directed by Mark Brokaw, the show stars Paige Faure as Cinderella, Andy Jones as Prince Topher, Kecia Lewis as The Fairy Godmother, Beth Glover as Ella’s wicked stepmother, David Andino as Jean-Michele, Kaitlyn Davidson as Gabrielle, Aymee Garcia as Charlotte, Antoine L. Smith as Lord Pinkleton, and Branch Woodman as Sebastian. In addition, Fran Drescher reprises her role as the wicked stepmother, Madame, for the Los Angeles engagement of the musical.

The creative team includes Kenneth Posner (light design), William Ivey Long (costume design), Anna Louizos (set design), Nevin Steinberg (sound design), Paul Huntley (hair and wig design), Josh Rhodes (choreography), David Chase (music adaptation, supervision, and arrangements), and Danny Troob (orchestrations).
