Malibu Playhouse will present the West Coast premiere of Billy Roche's Belfry as the second offering of its 2013-14 season. Performances will begin January 29 in advance of a January 31 opening and will run through March 9.
Belfry, the third play in Roche's internationally renowned Wexford Trilogy, premiered in 1991 at the Bush Theatre in London and was subsequently filmed for BBC with the original cast. The story follows Artie O'Leary, a lonely middle-aged man who lives with his mother and works as a sacristan in a Catholic church in small-town Wexford. After initiating an affair with a married woman named Angela, his life changes for the better until a betrayal tears the pair apart.
Veronica Brady directs a cast that stars Michael Hyland (Of Equal Measure) as Artie, Rebekah Tripp (The Liar) as Angela, John Rushing (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity) as Donal, Graham Sibley (House of Gold) as Father Pat, and 2010 American Idol contestant Carson Higgins as Dominic.
