Morgan Freeman will receive the AFI Life Achievement Award in a ceremony to be held on June 9, according to a report in Variety. He is the 27th actor to receive the award since its inception in 1973.

Freeman won an Academy Award for his work in Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby and has been nominated four other times, most recently for his portrayal of South African president Nelson Mandela in Invictus. Among his other film credits are Driving Miss Daisy, Glory, Unforgiven, The Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, and Amistad, as well as Batman Begins and its sequel, The Dark Knight. He will also be seen in the forthcoming movie Red, opposite John Malkovich and Helen Mirren.

Freeman received a Tony Award nomination in 1978 for The Mighty Gents; his other Broadway credits include The Country Girl, Purlie, and The Gospel at Colonus.
