Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group is now accepting applications for the 2013-14 August Wilson Program. The twofold program includes the August Wilson Monologue Competition for students in grades 10 through 12 as well as an in-school residency for educators from Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Applications for both are due October 1. Center Theatre Group is hosting the Monologue Competition for its third year in a row.

Now in its sixth year, the goal of the program is to introduce high school students to the work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson while helping them find their own creative voices. Presented by Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theaters, it includes participants from Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Boston, Portland, Seattle, and Pittsburgh in addition to its Los Angeles branch.

“Do not cheat yourself of this opportunity because of fear or insecurities,” said 2013 Los Angeles regional finalist Pablo Lopez. “Wilson wrote these characters about everyday people, so anyone can do it! As long as you have a heart that beats, you are fully capable of bringing a character to life.”
