2010 Tony Award nominee Kenny Leon will direct the independent feature film Cotton, according to Variety.

Based on the memoir Picking Cotton, by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton, this true story chronicles the friendship that develops after a woman identifies the wrong man as raping her, and he is sent to prison for eleven years before being freed. The film will feature an adaptation by Todd Komarnicki.

Leon was Tony-nominated for his direction of Fences, with Broadway directing credits also including Radio Golf, Gem of the Ocean, and A Raisin in the Sun. He also directed the teleplay version of the latter. He is the artistic director of the True Colors Theater Company in Atlanta, and will be directing Arena Stage’s production of Every Tongue Confess later this season.
