Tony Award winner John Mahoney will star in Conor McPherson’s The Seafarer at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, December 4-February 8, and Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse, April 14-May 24. The Geffen’s artistic director, Randall Arney, will direct. To date, Mahoney is the only cast member who will be participating in both productions.

Set in Dublin on Christmas Eve, the play follows Sharky, who has returned home to look after his aging brother who’s recently gone blind. With old drinking buddies on hand for a card game and the arrival of a stranger from the distant past, the stakes get raised and Sharky finds himself playing for his very soul.

Mahoney, who will play Richard Harkin, is best known for his role of Martin Crane on the sitcom Frasier. He won his Tony for The House of Blue Leaves, and appeared in the Broadway revival of Prelude to a Kiss. The actor will play the same role in the Steppenwolf production of The Seafarer, which is set to open in December 2008.

In addition to the director and lead actor, the two productions will feature set design by Takeshi Kata, costume design by Janice Pytel, lighting design by Daniel Ionazzi and sound design by Richard Woodbury.
