Writer and Producer Sherwood Schwartz Has Died

Writer and producer Sherwood Schwartz has died, according to published reports. He was 94.

While best known as the creator of the sitcoms Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch, Schwartz also authored several plays including the comedy Mr. and Mrs., the courtroom drama The Trial of Othello, and, most recently, the comedy-drama Rockers, seen at Theatre West in 2006.

In addition, he co-wrote Gilligan’s Island: The Musical with his son Lloyd Schwartz, his daughter Hope Juber, and son-in-law Laurence Juber. The show had a national tour in 2009.


Among Schwartz’s many honors are an Emmy for The Red Skelton Show, a Writers Guild of America Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2008, he was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.


He is survived by his wife, two sons, and daughter.
