Susan Anton to Join Harvey Fierstein, Nick Jonas, John Stamos, Marissa Jaret Winokur, et al. in Hollywood Bowl’s Hairspray

Susan Anton will play Velma von Tussle in Hairspray, to run August 5-7. Jerry Mitchell will direct and choreograph the production, which will have musical direction by Lon Hoyt.

Anton has previously played the role in the Las Vegas production of the musical. Among her other stage credits areThe Will Rogers Follies and Hurlyburly on Broadway and the national tours All Shook Up, They’re Playing Our Song, and A Couple of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking. In addition, she starred for seven years in The Great Radio City Music Hall Spectacular.

Based on the classic film by John Waters, Hairspray features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and launches a campaign to integrate the show.

As previously announced, the company will also feature Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur, reprising their Tony Award winning performances, respectively, as mother and daughter Edna and Tracy Turnblad, along with Corbin Bleu (Seaweed), Drew Carey (Wilbur Turnblad), Diana DeGarmo (Penny Pingleton), Mo Gaffney (Prudy Pingleton/The Gym Teacher/The Matron), Nick Jonas (Link Larkin), Darlene Love (Motormouth Maybelle), Tara Macri (Amber), and John Stamos (Corny Collins).
