The Getty will present the late Robert Fagles’ translation of Agamemnon in Getty Villa’s outdoor Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater, September 4-27. Stephen Wadsworth will direct. Casting will be announced at a later date.

Agamemnon, the first play of the Oresteia trilogy, tells the story of King Agamemnon of Mycenae, who returns home to Argos after spending ten long years away in the bloody Trojan War, only to face the wrath of his adulterous queen, Clytemnestra. She stabs him to death as revenge for having selfishly sacrificed their daughter to appease the gods and further the war effort. The cycle of revenge continues in the ensuing plays in the trilogy as Clytemnestra and Agamemnon’s son, Orestes, avenges his father’s death only to be driven mad by the gods.

Renowned translator Robert Fagles, who passed away earlier this year, tackled the works of Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Homer during his lifetime.
