The Ides of March, an adaptation of Beau Willimon’s play Farragut North co-written and directed by George Clooney, has been selected as the opening film for the 68th Venice Film Festival, according to published reports. As previously announced, the movie is scheduled for theatrical release in October.

The film follows a young press spokesman who falls prey to backroom politics, the treacherous manipulations of veteran operatives, and the seduction of a young intern.

In addition to Clooney, the movie stars Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood.

Farragut North premiered at the Atlantic Theater Company in 2008 and was subsequently seen at the Geffen Playhouse.
