Anthony Mackie has joined the cast of the forthcoming film, Gangster Squad, according to a report in Variety. Ruben Fleischer is directing the project, which has a script by Will Beall.

The movie is based on Paul Liberman’s “Tales from the Gangster Squad,” a seven-part series of stories in the Los Angeles Times, which chronicled how the Los Angeles Police Department formed the Gangster Squad to keep East Coast organized crime figures from establishing a presence in the area. The movie will also feature Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Michael Pena.

Mackie’s many stage credits include A Behanding in Spokane, Drowning Crow and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom on Broadway and The Bacchae, McReele, and A Soldier’s Play off-Broadway. His film credits include Million Dollar Baby, The Manchurian Candidate, Eagle Eye, The Hurt Locker, and The Adjustment Bureau, along with the forthcoming Real Steel and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
