Actress and playwright Eisa Davis has been awarded the 18th annual Alpert Award in the Arts by The Herb Alpert Foundation and California Institute of the Arts.

The award, a prize of $75,000, recognizes past performance and future promise to artists working in Dance, Film/Video, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts. The other winners are Nora Chipaumire (Dance); Kevin Everson (Film/Video); Myra Melford (Music); and Michael Smith (Visual Arts). The Alpert Award in the Arts recipients will receive their awards at a brunch on May 11 held at the Herb Alpert Foundation in Santa Monica.

Davis is currently creating a music-theater piece, Flowers Are Sleeping, which is scheduled to premiere in 2013 at New York's Symphony Space. Her work as a playwright includes Bulrusher, Ramp and Angela's Mixtape, and her many stage acting credits include Passing Strange and This.
