Actor Jackie Cooper Has Died

Screen star and Broadway veteran Jackie Cooper has died, according to published reports. He was 88.

Cooper made his Broadway debut in 1949 in Broadway Alley. He subsequently appeared on the Great White Way in Remains to Be Seen in 1951 and King of Hearts in 1954.

His acting career began in childhood, in such films as The Champ and Skippy, for which he received an Academy Award nomination in 1931. Among his other film credits are The Navy Comes Through, Where Are Your Children?, and French Leave. In addition, Cooper played Perry White opposite Christopher Reeve’s Clark Kent/Superman in the 1970s and 1980s films based on the popular comic book superhero.

For his work on television, he received Emmy Award nominations as an actor for Hennessey, and also won Emmy Awards for his directorial work on M*A*S*H and The White Shadow.
