Ruben Blades, Placido Domingo, Barry Manilow, Liza Minnelli Set for Hollywood Bowl 2012 Summer Series

The Los Angeles Philharmonic has announced events to be part of its Hollywood Bowl 2012 summer series, to run June to September.

The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by Thomas Wilkins, will kick off the summer season on June 22 with the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame concert, now in its 13th year. Legendary inductees for this year’s festivities are to be announced. Proceeds will benefit the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its music education programs.

Mel Brooks’ The Producers will be the annual fully-staged musical at the Bowl. Winner of 12 Tony Awards, the show is based on Brooks’ Oscar-winning 1968 film, and features music and lyrics by Brooks and a book by Brooks and Thomas Meehan. The presentation will feature an all-star cast, to be announced.

The LA Philharmonic’s music director Gustavo Dudamel will present six performances, to be joined by special guests cellist Yo-Yo Ma (August 7); pianist Yuja Wang (August 9); singers Željko Lucic, David Lomelí, Olga Peretyatko, Alexander Tsymbalyuk, and Ryan McKinny in Verdi’s Rigoletto (August 12); vocalist Juan Luis Guerra (August 14); pianist Sergio Tiempo (August 16); and opera star Plácido Domingo (August 19).

Among the other artists and programs that will be featured are A Celebration of Miles Davis (June 27), Barry Manilow (July 2, 3, and 4), Ray Charles: Genius + Soul = Jazz (July 11), A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor (July 13), Grease Sing-A-Long (July 14), Ziggy Marley (July 15), Joshua Bell (July 17 and 19), Smokey Robinson (July 20 and 21), apl.de.ap (July 22), The Neville Brothers Farewell Tour (August 1), Pixar in Concert (August 3, 4, and 5), The Duke Ellington Orchestra featuring Brian McKnight (August 8), Norah Jones (August 10), Liza Minnelli (August 11), Rubén Blades (August 15), Juanes (August 17 and 18), Anita Baker and Esperanza Spalding (August 22), Diana Krall (August 24 and 25), Celebrating Peace featuring Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Cindy Blackman Santana, and Carlos Santana (August 29), John Williams: Maestro of the Movies (August 31 and September 1), The Big Picture: Paramount’s 100th Anniversary, featuring the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by David Newman. (September 2), Blues Night featuring B.B. King and the Tedeschi Trucks Band (September 5), and Sing-A-Long Sound of Music (September 22).
