Dante Basco, Fran de Leon, James Kyson Lee (who plays Ando on NBC’s Heroes), Camille Mana, and Tamlyn Tomita will star in a staged reading of excerpts from Libby Emmons’ The Girls From Afar, to be presented by East West Players (EWP). Jeff Liu will direct the reading, which will take place at Tateuchi Democracy Forum in the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy on Thursday, January 21 at 7:30pm.

The reading is being presented as part of the first annual “From Slavery to Freedom” campaign to raise awareness of slavery and human trafficking in the Greater Los Angeles area, the U.S. and around the world, which EWP is presenting in partnership with The Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST). The piece highlights the issue of human trafficking through the fictional story of a family’s journey as they deal with the reality of modern day slavery and injustice. The reading will be followed by a panel discussion and reception.

Admission is free, but RSVP’s are recommended. Call 213-625-7000. For a full listing of “From Slavery to Freedom” events, visit www.castla.org.
