Jake Broder, Vanessa Smith, Julie White, et al. Win Ovation Awards

The LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards, honoring the best in Los Angeles-area theater during the 2008-2009 season, were presented last night at a ceremony at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.

The winners were led by two productions, each receiving three awards apiece. Louis & Keely, Live at the Sahara won for Production of a Musical – Large and for its two stars, Jake Broder and Vanessa Smith. Center Theatre Group’s presentation of The Little Dog Laughed won for star Julie White, and for lighting (Donald Holder) and set (Allen Moyer).

Among the other wins were Kevin King for Playwriting for an Original Play for The Idea Man; Havok Theatre Company’s Kiss of the Spider Woman for Production of a Musical – Intimate and choreographer Lee Martino; and Ebony Repertory Theatre’s Two Trains Running for Production of a Play – Large and lead actor Glynn Truman. Ovation’s newest award for Best Season went to The Troubadour Theatre Company, which also won for Matt Walker’s direction of As U2 Like It and Sharon McGunigle’s costume design for Alice in One Hit Wonderland.
