Film and stage star Ben Barnes will play Stephen Wraysford in the West End stage version of Sebastian Faulks’ best-selling novel Birdsong, adapted by Rachel Wagstaff and directed by Tony Award winner Trevor Nunn, which begins previews at the Comedy Theatre on September 18.

The play tells the story of one man’s journey through an all-consuming love affair and the horror of the First World War.

Barnes’ stage credits include Sex, Chips & Rock’n’Roll Loving Ophelia and The History Boys. His film credits include The Chronicles of Narnia, Dorian Gray, and Bigga Than Ben, and he will be seen in the upcoming The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Wagstaff has previously adapted Faulks’ The Girl at the Lion d’Or for BBC Radio 4. Her other stage credits include Only the Brave and The Soldier.

Nunn, a former artistic director of both the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, is currently represented on Broadway with the revival of A Little Night Music. He is also directing the forthcoming London revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love.
