Matthew Warchus to Direct Old Vic's The Norman Conquests

By: Terri Paddock · May 20, 2008  · London

2008 Tony Award nominee Matthew Warchus will direct the Old Vic's revival of Alan Ayckborun's trilogy The Norman Conquests, to run in repertory September 11- December 20. The theater will be reconfigured in-the-round to reflect the play's original 1974 staging.

The show will star Stephen Mangan, Amelia Bullmore, Jessica Hynes, and Paul Ritter, with additional casting still to be announced. Rob Howell will design the production.

The trilogy is played out in three different areas of the house -- Table Manners in the dining room, Living Together in the living room, and Round and Round the Garden in the garden -- with the action of each occurring simultaneously. Believing it his mission in life to make women happy by showering them with love, Norman makes the most of every opportunity to seduce his sister-in-law Annie, charm his brother-in-law Reg's wife Sarah and woo his wife Ruth during a disastrous weekend.

Warchus is nominated for his direction of the revival of Boeing-Boeing, which originated in London, and previously received Tony nominations for True West and Art. He is currently represented by the London production of God of Carnage. His many other stage credits include Speed-the-Plow, Follies, and The Unexpected Man.
