Jude Law, Helen Mirren, Rachel Weisz, et al. Nominated for Whatsonstage Awards

The nominations in the tenth annual Whatsonstage.com Awards have been announced. The awards are the only major theater prize-giving decided by the public, who vote online at awards.whatsonstage.com.

Three musicals received seven nominations each — Sister Act, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Trevor Nunn’s Menier Chocolate Factory revival of A Little Night Music, which is now previewing on Broadway. Enron and Jerusalem, both first seen in London at the Royal Court and transferring in the new year to the West End, lead the nominations for plays at five and four nods respectively.

The Best Actor in a Play category nominees include Mark Rylance (Jerusalem), David Harewood (The Mountaintop), Dominic West (Life Is a Dream), Jude Law (Hamlet), Ken Stott (A View from the Bridge), and Samuel West (Enron). In the Best Actress in a Play category, Fiona Shaw has been nominated for title role in Mother Courage & Her Children, along with Alison Steadman (Enjoy), Helen Mirren (Phedre), Juliet Stevenson (Duet for One), Lesley Sharp (The Rise & Fall of Little Voice) and Rachel Weisz (A Streetcar Named Desire).

The nominees for Best Actress in a Musical are Charlotte Wakefield (Spring Awakening), Hannah Waddingham (A Little Night Music), Jane Horrocks (Annie Get Your Gun), Kathryn Evans (Sunset Boulevard), Patina Miller (Sister Act), and Samantha Spiro (Hello, Dolly!). In the Best Actor in a Musical category, Alexander Hanson (A Little Night Music), Aneurin Barnard (Spring Awakening), Jason Donovan (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), Julian Ovenden (Annie Get Your Gun), Rowan Atkinson (Oliver!), and Tony Sheldon (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) have all been nominated.

Notable actors nominated in supporting roles include Hayley Atwell (A View from the Bridge), Mackenzie Crook (Jerusalem ), Kate Fleetwood (Life Is a Dream), Lesley Garrett (Carousel), Sheila Hancock (Sister Act), Miriam Margolyes (Endgame), Jodie Prenger (Oliver!), Iwan Rheon (Spring Awakening), and Patrick Stewart (Hamlet). Nominated solo performers include Alan Cumming, Clare Higgins, and David Hare.

In the awards’ London Newcomer of the Year category, Lenny Henry (Othello), Diana Vickers (The Rise & Fall of Little Voice), Nicholas Hoult (New Boy), Patina Miller (Sister Act), Jaime Winstone (The Fastest Clock in the Universe) and Tom Sturridge (Punk Rock) have all been nominated.
