Meera Syal will play the title role in Frank Marcus’ The Killing of Sister George, at the Arts Theatre, October 5-29. Iqbal Khan will direct.

In the play, Sister George is a sweet and cheerful nurse in a popular rural radio soap. Yet in the real world, far from the country lanes and kindly ways of her fictional character; she is a cruel, self-centred and manipulative alcoholic, who torments and humiliates her live-in companion Childie. When it is announced that George is to be killed off on screen, this signals an end to her career and life begins to spiral out of her control.

The cast will also include Elizabeth Cadwallader (Childie), Belinda Lang (Mrs Croft), and Helen Lederer (Madam Xenia). The production will be designed by Ciaran Bagnall with sound design by Mark Dunne.

Syal is best known for her television work including Goodness Gracious Me, The Kumars at Number 42, Beautiful People, Life isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee and Linda Green. She was most recently seen on stage in Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita.
