Actress Googie Withers Has Died

Actress Googie Withers has died at age 94.

Withers’ stage credits include The Complaisant Love, which played on Broadway during the 1961-1962 season, and Exit the King, The School for Scandal, The Circle and On Golden Pond in the West End. Her last West End appearance was in a production of Lady Windemere’s Fan in 2002.

In Australia, where she and husband John McCallum moved in 1958, she appeared in Simon and Laura, The Deep Blue Sea, Desire of the Moth, The First 400 Years, Beekman Place, The Kingfisher, Stardust, The Cherry Orchard, and An Ideal Husband.

Among her many film and television credits are The Lady Vanishes, One of Our Aircraft is Missing, Night and the City, The Loves of Joanna Godden, Within These Walls, and Shine.

Withers’ was honored in 1980 when she became the first non-Australian to be awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia. In addition, she received a CBE in 2001.
