A new musical production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will officially open at the London Palladium in June 2013.

It will be directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes, with a book by David Greig and new songs from Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Adapted from the novel by Roald Dahl, the work focuses on the mysterious Willy Wonka, who is opening his Chocolate Factory for just one day. The event promises to be a mouth-watering chance for young Charlie Bucket and a group of other youngsters to feast their eyes on sweets beyond their wildest imagination.

The creative team includes Mark Thompson (set and costumes), Peter Darling (choreography), Doug Besterman (orchestrations), Nicholas Skilbeck (music direction), Paul Pyant (lighting), Paul Arditti (sound) and Jon Driscoll (video and projections).

Mendes won the Academy Award for American Beauty. His many stage credits include The Vertical Hour, Gypsy, Cabaret, The Blue Room, Uncle Vanya, Twelfth Night, As You Like It and The Tempest.
