British actress Elisabeth Sladen, who was best known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith in the longrunning BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who and its spinoff, The Sarah Jane Adventures, has died in England from cancer at age 63, according to published reports.

Sladen worked as an assistant stage manager at the Liverpool Playhouse, as well as appearing on stage there. Her other UK stage credits include Othello and Peter Pan.

Her many other film and television credits include Coronation Street, Stepping Stones, Send in the Girls, Alice in Wonderland, and Dempsey and Makepeace.
