Terry Gilliam, Des McAnuff, Simon McBurney, Bartlett Sher to Direct for English National Opera’s 2010-2011 Season

The English National Opera (ENO) has announced its 2010-2011 season.

The year will open and close with Des McAnuff’s new staging of Gounod’s Faust. The fall engagement of this co-production with the Metropolitan Opera will run September 18 – October 16 and will feature Toby Spence in the title role.The creative team will include Robert Brill (set design), Paul Tazewell (costume design), Peter Mumfor (lighting design), and Kelly Devine (choreography).

Another new production for the ENO will be Rufus Norris’ staging of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, which will enter the repertoire on November 6. Iain Paterson will play the title role in the production, which will have a creative team that includes Ian MacNeil (scenic design), Nicky Gillibrand (costume design), Mimi Jordan Sherin (lighting design), and Finn Ross (projection design).

The ENO will also present the U.K. premiere of Alexander Raskatov’s A Dog’s Heart, which will have a first performance of November 20. Simon McBurney will direct the piece, which will feature scenic design by Michael Levine, costume design by Christina Cunningham, lighting design by Paul Anderson, projection design by Finn Ross, and puppetry design by Blind Summit.

On May 6, Terry Gilliam’s staging of Berlioz’ The Damnation of Faust will premiere, featuring Christine Rice (Marguerite) and Christopher Purves (Mephistopheles). The creative team will include scenic designer Hildegard Bechtler, costume designer Katrina Lindsay, lighting designer Peter Mumford, and choreographer Leah Hausman.

In addition, Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher will direct the world premiere of an as-yet-untitled new opera by Nico Muhly. Co-produced with the Metropolitan Opera, the piece has its basis in the true story of a teenager who attempted to arrange his own murder via the internet. The creative team will include Michael Yeargan (scenic design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Donald Holder (lighting design) and Fifty Nine Productions (video design). The premiere of the piece will be offered at the London Coliseum on June 24 and is scheduled to be part of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2013-14 season.

Other new productions will include David Alden’s staging of Handel’s Radamisto, starting performances October 7; Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia directed by Mike Figgis and beginning performances January 31; Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses, which will enter the repertoire on March 24 and be directed by Benedict Andrews; Dmitri Tcherniakov’s staging of Verdi’s Siomon Boccanegra (June 8), and

Among the revivals in the ENO season are Jonathan Miller’s production of La Boheme and The Mikado; and Parsifal directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff.
