Jonathan Miller to Direct Rutherford & Son for Northern Broadsides’ U.K. Tour

Sir Jonathan Miller will direct Barrie Rutter in Githa Soweby’s Rutherford & Son for the U.K. company Northern Broadsides. Isabella Bywater will design the production, which will launch a U.K. tour from the Viaduct next February.

The play, set at the turn of the last century, centers on an elderly business magnate (Rutter) and the struggles he has both with his adult children and his company. Additional casting, along with tour dates and cities, will be announced in the near future.

Miller’s many theater credits include Beyond the Fringe, the 1986 revival of Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and King Lear on Broadway. In addition, he has directed productions for English National Opera, Glimmerglass and Glyndbourne. He and Rutter have previously worked together on a production of The Taming of the Shrew in at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987.
