Gregory Doran has been appointed artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), succeeding Michael Boyd, who, as previously reported, had announced his plans to step down from the position this year. Doran will assume his new role with the company in September.

Doran is currently chief associate director of the RSC. He joined the company 25 years ago as an actor. He later became an RSC assistant director in 1989 and associate director in 1996. He assumed his position in 2006.

Among Doran’s most recent productions for the company are Written on the Heart, Cardenio, Morte d’Arthur, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Love’s Labour’s Lost, as well as Hamlet, starring David Tennant and Patrick Stewart, which was later taped for broadcast. This year, as previously announced, he is directing Julius Caesar for the World Shakespeare Festival and The Orphan of Zhao.
