The musical stage adaptation of Disney’s The Lion King is set to begin its first UK tour, kicking off with an 11-week engagement at the Bristol Hippodrome August 31-November 17, 2012, with an opening set for September 6.

The production will then play the Palace Theatre Manchester, December 1-March 31, 2013. There are an additional 10 cities in the UK & Ireland where the tour will stop over the next two and a half years, with further dates to be announced.

Based on the 1994 animated film, the musical tells the tale of Simba, the young lion cub, as he journeys through life and struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role of King. The show features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from the film along with additional songs. The musical was originally adapted by director and co-designer Julie Taymor.

The Lion King continues to play on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre and in London at the Lyceum Theatre, as well as in Tokyo, Hamburg, Sapporo, Madrid and on tour in the US. The Lion King UK tour will be the 20th production to premiere internationally.
