Maria Friedman to Join English National Ballet for Strictly Gerhswin

Maria Friedman will join the English National Ballet (ENB) for a limited engagement of Strictly Gershwin, to play June 9-19 at Royal Albert Hall, according to a report on Whatsonstage.com. Derek Dearie has choreographed the production, which has musical direction by Gareth Valentine.

The show, a tribute to composer George Gershwin, was originally seen in 2008, and features 67 ENB dancers and a 50 piece jazz orchestra. Among the songs featured in the production are “Rhapsody in Blue”, “An American in Paris”, “Summertime”, “Shall We Dance”, “The Man I Love”, “Someone to Watch Over Me”, “‘S Wonderful” and “Strike up the Band”.

In addition to Friedman, each performance will feature international guest stars including Royal Ballet principal Tamara Rojo, Stuttgart Ballet’s Friedemann Vogel, Guillaume Côté from the National Ballet of Canada and tap dancers Douglas Mills and Paul Robinson.

Friedman’s many stage credits include The Witches of Eastwick, The Woman in White, Chicago, Lady in the Dark, Passion, Ragtime, and Sunday in the Park with George, as well as numerous solo concerts in London and the United States.
