Derek Jacobi, Jenny Jules, Bruce Norris, David Suchet, et al. Win Critics Circle Theatre Awards in London

The winners of the Critics Circle Theatre Awards have been announced, according to a report on WhatsOnStage.com. The prizes were presented in a ceremony held on January 25 at the Prince of Wales Theatre’s Delfont Room.

Among the winners are David Suchet, who received the Best Actor prize for his performance in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, and Jenny Jules, who was honored as Best Actress for her performance in Ruined.

The Donmar Warehouse production of King Lear received two prizes, one for Derek Jacobi, who won the John and Wendy Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance for his portrayal of the title character and one for director Michael Grandage. As previously announced, this latter production will be seen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theatre in April.

Grandage shared the award for Best Director with Thea Sharrock, who was honored for her staging of Terrence Rattigan’s After the Dance. The award for Best Designer went to Bunny Christie for her work on The White Guard. Both artists are the first women to receive awards in these categories.

The Critics Circle Theatre Award for Best Play was given to Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park and Matilda, which is based on Roald Dahl’s children’s book, was named Best Musical. Additionally, Anya Reiss was named Most Promising Playwright for her debut Spur of the Moment.
