Actress Susannah York Dies at 72

Award-winning stage and screen actress Susannah York died Saturday, at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London following a battle with cancer, according to published reports. She was 72.

York received a Bafta Award and Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969). She also received a Golden Globe nomination for Freud (1962) and won a 1972 Best Actress at the Cannes Film Fesival award for Images. Her additional film credits include Tom Jones (1963), A Man for All Seasons (1966), The Killing of Sister George (1968), and the 1980s Superman films where she played the title character’s mother Lara. She received an Emmy nomination for her work in the title role of a television version of Jane Eyre.

On stage, she performed several one-woman shows, including Independent State, Picasso’s Women, The Human Voice, and The Loves of Shakespeare’s Women. Additional stage credits include productions of Peter Pan, Hamlet, A Singular Man, The Apple Cart, September Tide, Hedda Gabler, Man and Superman, A Streetcar Named Desire, Private Lives, and Amy’s View.

York is survived by her son Orlando, her daughter Sasha, and several grandchildren.
