Toby Gough’s musical The Merchants of Bollywood will play a two-week engagement at New York City Center as part of a North American tour, according to a report in The New York Times. Gough has also directed the musical, which will play Toronto in October as well as other U.S. cities to be announced at a later date.

The show is loosely based on the real-life story of the Merchant family, whose members have been prominent choreographers and filmmakers since the beginning of the Hindi film industry in the 1920s. One member of the family, Vaibhavi Merchant, serves as the production’s choreographer.

Merchants has already embarked on an international tour. It will play the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (February 2-11). It will then play various venues in Australia (February 17 – April 11). Later in the spring, the production is scheduled to play the Peacock Theatre in London for a three-week run.
