Bill Cain’s Equivocation Wins Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award

The American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) has named Bill Cain’s Equivocation as the winner of the 2010 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award, which recognizes the best scripts which premiered professionally in 2009 outside New York City. Cain will receive a commemorative plaque and a cash prize of $25,000 at a ceremony at Actors Theatre of Louisville on March 27.

Equivocation is set in 1605 England and begins when King James’ right hand man commissions William Shakespeare to write a new play about the Gunpowder Plot, a recent failed attempt to blow up Parliament and the Monarchy. The play premiered April 18, 2009, at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, later played at Seattle Repertory Theatre and is currently being presented by Manhattan Theatre Club at New York City Center, through March 28.

In addition, The Steinberg/ATCA has awarded two additional citations, including plaques and $7,500 each, to Time Stands Still, by Donald Margulies, and Legacy of Light, by Karen Zacarías. Margulies’ play is currently being presented on Broadway by Manhattan Theatre Club at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, through March 27.
