Empanada for a Dream
Fabuloso Fringe
by Mary Kroeck on Sunday, Sep 5th, 2010 at 1:55 pmWhen I first got Teatro Vistas e-mail blast about this show I began to harbor some high expectations for the production & Im thrilled that it did not disappoint. If you missed this show, you missed one of the best productions in Chicago this weekend. Under the direction of Teatro Vistas Associate Artistic Director, Joe Minoso, Juan Francisco Villa presented a poignant, funny, and honestly acted one-man show. Occasionally, "Empanada" still felt like a work in progress, especially during Villas transitional monologues when he began to recall a moment - like the neighborhood Rapunzel and her brother or being a Yankees fan in the 90s - but didnt take the time to fully recall the memory and let the audience live in it with him. However, if this production is any indication of Teatro Vistas upcoming season, I have a feeling this year will be exceptionally delectable!
