Main Street Theater Announces Its 2008-2009 Season

Main Street Theater has announced the line up for its 2008-2009 season, which will be presented at both the company’s Times Boulevard and Chelsea Market theaters.

The season will open with Third by Wendy Wasserstein with Cheryl L. Kaplan at the helm, August 30-September 21. The play examines what it means to open up to the world and expand your point of view. The world premiere of …and L.A. Is Burning will follow, October 11-November 9, set against the backdrop of the Rodney King trial and the subsequent L.A. riots. In the piece, playwright Y York examines the terrain of the modern workplace, on which well-intentioned liberalism, racism, the news, reality itself, and the Cosby Show intersect. Troy Scheid will direct.

But Not Goodbye by George Seaton will fill the holiday season, November 28-December 28, with the spirit of Sam Griggs who watches helplessly as his family faces disaster, but just as his father predicted, it all works out for the best in this comedic fantasy. Steve Garfinkel will direct. The new year will open with the Houston premiere of the musical The Light in the Piazza, January 3-25, which follows Margaret Johnson and her daughter Clara when love comes unexpectedly on a tour through Italy in the summer of 1953. With Ron Jones at the helm, Glenn Sharp will provide musical direction.

February will see another world premiere with The Pie Dialogues, February 21-March 22, a play by Joseph Lauinger that follows Dawn and Sean through their lives as parents of Pie, and as individuals. Finally, the season will close with Awake and Sing!, May 2-June 7, Clifford Odets’ story of Bessie Berger and her boisterous family as they struggle with poverty and the hardships of the Great Depression, directed by Claire Hart-Palumbo. Steve Garfinkel will appear as Jacob.
