Bologna, 1858. An unexpected knock at the door of a Jewish household turns the lives of the occupants inside-out. The police have arrived to remove the family's six-year-old Edgardo who has been secretly baptized and remand him to the custody of Pope Pius IX. The parents' fight to reclaim their child leads to confrontations with the Vatican, an international scandal, and a change in the political landscape of Italy.
