A few months ago I was at the Boston Ballet for Black and White. It was toward the beginning on the show and I realized I forgot to turn my phone to vibrate. My settings are Level 1-5, Silent then Vibrate. I normally have it on Level 5 and hit the button twice to go to Vibrate. Well I guess it was on Level 4 so when I hit it once it went to Level 5. It scared me so I closed it quickly but for some reason it continued to play for a few seconds before finally shutting off. I decided to just turn it completely off until intermission when I could set it to vibrate.

Recently at PPAC, the Fiddler tour, they did not make the usual announcement about turning them off. I heard at least 5 different phones ring. So the announcement is important.

ANY ringing phone during ANY performance is a bad experience, a demonstration of inexcusably selfish indifference to other theatre-goers and especially to performers. At Tovah Feldshuh's solo performance of "Golda's Balcony," when a phone intruded during a quiet scene, the actress stopped speaking and stared daggers in the direction of the offender. If looks could kill....

Once, at a Studio Theatre production of 'The Pillowman,' during the scene where Katurian is killing his brother, someone's cellphone went off...what's worse, the ringtone was the 'I Dream of Jeannie' theme song.

Admittedly, as a student of all things postmodern and ironic, I did find the juxtaposition fascinating. But I doubt the playwright would have appreciated it.
