RE:the color purple review - 9:37AM on 7/03/2009
I was a little disappointed because I expected the play to rock my world.
I felt it was created more for the masses -- the general public -- than for theater lovers. The first Act felt a bit watered down - it swept through events without the characters sinking their teeth into them nor the audience really experiencing them.
I feel they played to the laughs too much. The story wasnt a comedy, even though there were funny parts of it.
Sophia was hammed up, for example, and it became cliche.
The second Act was much improved over the first Act. They finally did some real dancing and singing. The African scenes were my favorite. I wanted to Fantasia sing more. I felt she never really sang enuf complete songs. There were lots of pregnant, dramatic pauses and I wanted to hear her just belt out an extended song.
In all, I am glad I went. I just wanted more!
