Synopsis

Mad Cow Theatre presents one of the most celebrated and award-winning plays of the new century - Doug Wright's I Am My Own Wife, the extraordinary story of the German transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. Keith Kirkwood stars in this solo play, directed by Alan Bruun.

Born Lothar Berfelde in 1928 in Berlin, Charlotte managed to survive two of the 20th century's most brutal regimes - Hitler's Third Reich and the Communist-controlled East Germany. Throughout this terrifying period in German history, she managed to live and thrive as a woman in the face of the Nazis and the Stasi (East German secret police), a testament to the power of the individual in the midst of absolute tyranny. A lifelong collector of antique furniture and a controversial figure who may have been an informer for the State, von Malsdorf nevertheless managed to create a museum that became a mainstay of East Germany's underground gay culture.

I Am My Own Wife tells the story of Charlotte through her relationship with the playwright himself, who traveled to Berlin over a period of years to interview her and record her story on tape. The result is a play in which one actor plays over 35 different characters, including both Charlotte and Doug Wright, the playwright.

I Am My Own Wife has received almost every major award, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Drama Desk Award, and the 2004 Tony Award for Best Play.
