Arena Stage to Present Musical Theater Symposium

Arena Stage will join with the Georgeown University Theater and Performance Studies Program to present Where Are You Taking Me?: What’s Next in Musical Theater, a free, day-long symposium with musical theater practitioners from around the country at the Georgetown University Davis Performing Arts Center, Monday, November 10.

The symposium will include a closed roundtable discussion from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. that will feature a discussion of trends, challenges and best practices in developing new American musicals. Arena’s Artistic Director Molly Smith will be joined by theater professionals including Sheldon Epps (Artistic Director, Pasadena Playhouse), Eric Schaeffer (Artistic Director, Signature Theatre), Tim Sanford (Artistic Director, Playwrights Horizons) and Mara Isaacs (Producing Director, McCarter Theatre Center) among others. David Dower (Associate Artistic Director, Arena Stage) will moderate.

The event will also include an open performance of songs from up-and-coming musicals at the Gonda Theatre at 8:00 p.m., featuring songs from over ten new musicals currently in development by composers such as Michael John LaChiusa, Nancy Harrow and Paul Scott Goodman. Performers include Steve Cupo, Mary Mossberg and Tracy Lynn Olivera among others.
