Signature Theatre has announced its 2010-2011 season, which will begin with a production of Chess (August 10 – September 26). Eric Schaeffer will direct the musical, which features a book by Richard Nelson, music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, and lyrics by Tim Rice.

The season will continue with two world premiere plays: Ken Ludwig’s new farce A Fox on the Fairway (October 12 – November 14), directed by John Rando; and Joe Calarco’s Walter Cronkite is Dead ( October 26 – December 19), in which two women discover a common bond despite their differences. During the winter, Florence Lacey will star in a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard (December 7 – February 13), which will be directed by Schaeffer.

Next spring, Signature Theatre will produce the world premiere of Wheatley’s Folly (March 15 – April 10), which features a book by Michael Slade, music by Joseph Thalken, and lyrics by Mark Campbell. Schaeffer will direct this backstage comedy about the creation of the first American musical in 1866. The season will wind down with a production of Yasmina Reza’s Art (March 29 – May 22) and the revue Side by Side by Sondheim (April 26 – June 12).

During the coming year, the theater will also continue its cabaret series, which will include appearances from Julie Nixon (January 11-15) and Katie Thompson (February 22-26) as well as such musical pieces as The Lost Songs of Broadway, 1950-1960 (September 14-18) and Broadway Duets (June 7-11) and the theater’s annual Holiday Cabaret (December 20-23).
