Liz Mikel and Stacia Goad-Malone to Lead WaterTower Xanadu

The Texas theater has released complete casting for its production of the romantic roller-disco musical.

WaterTower Theatre producing artistic director Terry Martin announced casting for his upcoming production of the 1980 film-turned-Broadway-musical Xanadu.

Originally a romantic musical fantasy film starring Olivia Newton-John (Kira), Michael Beck (Sonny), and Gene Kelly (Danny), Xanadu came to Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre in 2007 where it played 512 performances with Kerry Butler (Kira), Cheyenne Jackson (Sonny), and Tony Roberts (Danny) taking on lead roles. The plot follows a Greek muse, Kira, who descends from Mt. Olympus to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to master the art of roller disco. However, the forbidden love that develops between the two eventually leads to chaos.

Helmed by Robert Bartley, creator and director of New York City’s annual Broadway Backwards concert, the cast will feature Broadway veterans Liz Mikel (Lysistrata Jones and TV’s Friday Night Lights) and Stacia Goad-Malone (Starlight Express) as the comedic Melpomene and Calliope (originated on Broadway by Mary Testa and Jackie Hoffman, respectively). Brittany Danielle will star as Kira, with Sean McGee costarring in the role of Sonny, and Bradley Campbell in the role of Danny. The ensemble includes Jessi Little, Mallory Michaellan, Thomas Renner, and Darius-Anthony Robinson.

The creative team will feature music direction by Mark Mullino, choreography by Jacob Brent, and set design by Bob Lavallee.
