Synopsis:
City Lights Youth Theatre is thrilled to present Pippin, the tale of a young man's quest to find complete fulfillment in a chaotic world. Book by Roger O. Hisron, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Directed and Choreographed by John Bronston with Musical Direction by Bigad Khloussi. This February and March at The Hypothetical Theatre, a multi-cultural group of New York City high school and college students presents the groundbreaking pop/rock musical that is as relevant today as it premiered in 1972. The title character Pippin, son of 9th century Roman Emperor Charlemagne, feels entitled to have a life that is truly extraordinary. The troupe of actors, singers, dancers, and magicians, headed by two Leading Players, guide him on a musical journey through many possible paths toward his "role" in the world. Center stage, he confronts issues related to war, sex, politics, art, religion, and family life. Originally produced during the Vietnam War, Pippin tells an ancient story in a modern way with a timeless question: how does a young man find his purpose in a world that frequently doesn't make sense? The City Lights production of Pippin features dynamic choreography inspired by the Tony Award-winning original production by Bob Fosse (Chicago,Cabaret), based on the dark and probing book by Roger O. Hirson with a stylistically diverse score by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Enchanted).
