Joan Allen, Stephen Lang, Matthew Modine, and David Strathairn will read from Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience, a new anthology of writings by U.S. soldiers and their families about their experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq and on the homefront, on Wednesday, September 27 at Symphony Space (Broadway at 95th Street), beginning at 8pm. The event marks the opening of the 24th season of Symphony Space's acclaimed series Selected Shorts: A Celebration of the Short Story.
The anthology grew out of 50 National Endowment for the Arts-sponsored workshops that were led by such prominent authors as Tobias Wolff, Tom Clancy, and Bobbie Ann Mason. Servicemen and women were encouraged to write freely and openly about their lives in wartime. The collections editor, Andrew Carroll, and NEA Chairman Dana Gioia will provide introductions during the September 27 event.
